Average and Weighted Average

Average is total divided by count. The exam rarely asks that directly. It asks what happens to the average when a member joins, leaves or is replaced. The fastest route is the deviation method: work with how far each value sits from an assumed average instead of with the values themselves.

The deviation shortcut

Pick a convenient number near the values, add the deviations from it, and divide by the count. You then add that correction back.

Average = assumed value + (sum of deviations)/count

Change, replacement and inclusion

SituationRuleNote
A new member joinsNew average shifts by (new value minus old average) over new countWorks for age and marks
One member is replacedChange in total = count x change in averageMost asked type
All values increase by xThe average also increases by xNo calculation needed
All values multiplied by xThe average is multiplied by xNo calculation needed

Weighted average

Weighted average = (n1 x a1 + n2 x a2) / (n1 + n2)

When two groups of unequal size are combined, you cannot average the two averages. Alligation is simply the weighted average read backwards, so either tool solves these.

Solved examples

Example 1. The average of 10 numbers is 45. If one number, 28, is replaced by 68, find the new average. The total rises by 40, so the average rises by 40 divided by 10 = 4, giving 49.

Example 2. The average age of 30 students is 12 years. Including the teacher, the average becomes 13. Find the teacher's age. The total rises by 31 times 13 minus 30 times 12 = 403 minus 360 = 43 years.

Example 3. A batsman has an average of 40 after 20 innings. He scores 82 in the next innings. Find his new average. New total = 800 plus 82 = 882, divided by 21 = 42.

Example 4. A class of 20 boys averages 60 marks and 30 girls average 70 marks. Find the class average. Weighted average = (20 times 60 + 30 times 70) divided by 50 = (1200 + 2100)/50 = 66.

Example 5. Find the average of the first 15 odd numbers. The first n odd numbers average to n, so the answer is 15.

Traps SSC repeats

Average of 60 and 70 for the class is 65  |   Group sizes differ, so the weighted average is 66

Average of the first n natural numbers is n/2  |   It is (n + 1)/2

Replacement wale sawaal me poora total dobara mat nikalo. Sirf itna dekho ki total kitna badla, aur use count se baant do - yahi sabse tez raasta hai.

Exam pointer — Average gives 1 to 2 questions in Tier 1, usually the replacement or the joining-member type, and it also appears inside data interpretation sets. These are reliable marks with a light calculation load. Target 30 seconds. Avoid rebuilding the full total: work only with the change in total, which is what the deviation method gives you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shortcut for average replacement questions?

The change in the total equals the number of members multiplied by the change in the average. So if one value rises by 40 in a group of 10, the average rises by exactly 4.

What is a weighted average?

It is the average of two or more groups of different sizes, found by multiplying each group's average by its size, adding the results and dividing by the total size. Averaging the averages is wrong unless the groups are equal.

What is the average of the first n natural numbers?

It is n plus 1, divided by 2. For the first 20 natural numbers the average is 10.5. The average of the first n odd numbers, by contrast, is simply n.

How do I find a new member's value from the change in average?

Multiply the new average by the new count, then subtract the old total. The difference is the new member's value, which is how teacher-age and new-batsman questions are solved.

60-second recap

  • Average = total over count; work with the change in total.
  • Change in total = count x change in average.
  • Weighted average needs group sizes, never averages of averages.
  • First n natural numbers average (n+1)/2; first n odd numbers average n.
  • Adding x to every value adds x to the average.

Average = माना हुआ मान + (deviations का योग)/संख्या

Weighted average

Weighted average = (n1 x a1 + n2 x a2) / (n1 + n2)

Example 3. नया कुल = 800 plus 82 = 882, divided by 21 = 42

Example 4. Weighted average = (20 times 60 + 30 times 70) divided by 50 = (1200 + 2100)/50 = 66

Example 5.

Replacement wale sawaal me poora total dobara mat nikalo. Sirf itna dekho ki total kitna badla, aur use count se baant do - yahi sabse tez raasta hai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Weighted average

यह n plus 1 divided by 2 होता है।

60-second recap
