Classification Patterns
Classification asks which item does not belong to a group, or which group an item belongs to. It differs from odd one out in that the pattern is often a two-step rule, such as a letter pair whose positions differ by a fixed number and also skip a vowel.
Single-step and two-step patterns
| Set | Rule | Odd item |
|---|---|---|
| BD, FH, JL, MO | Gap of 2 inside each pair, starting letters at 2, 6, 10 | MO: the start should be N, at position 14 |
| AE, EI, IO, OU | Both letters are vowels | None: all four fit |
| 4, 9, 16, 20 | Perfect squares | 20 |
| Cricket, Hockey, Chess, Football | Played outdoors | Chess |
When a single-step rule leaves two candidates, look for a second condition layered on the first. SSC builds its harder classification questions exactly this way.
Mixed letter and number sets
For sets combining letters and digits, convert the letters to positions first and then look for the arithmetic link between the two parts of each item.
Convert letters to positions before searching for a numeric pattern
Solved examples
Example 1. Which does not belong: Triangle, Square, Circle, Rectangle? Three are made of straight sides and a circle is not, so the answer is Circle.
Example 2. Which does not belong: 8, 27, 64, 100? Three are perfect cubes, so the answer is 100.
Example 3. Which does not belong: Copper, Iron, Silver, Diamond? Three are metals and one is not, so the answer is Diamond.
Example 4. Which does not belong: January, March, May, June? The first three have 31 days and June has 30, so the answer is June.
Example 5. Which does not belong: DF, HJ, LN, PS? The gap in the first three is 2, but in PS it is 3, so the answer is PS.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Group by how familiar the words feel | ✓ Group by a stated, checkable property
✗ Accept the first rule that separates one item | ✓ Check whether a second condition is also at work
Agar ek niyam se do option bach jayein to doosra niyam dhoondho. SSC ke mushkil sawaal do shart ek saath lagate hain.
Exam pointer — Classification gives about 1 question per shift and takes 20 to 25 seconds. The verbal form is faster than the letter-pair form because no position conversion is needed. Since analogy and classification together are worth 3 to 4 marks with very little calculation, this pair of topics should be your opening block in the reasoning section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between classification and odd one out?
They are closely related. Odd one out asks which single item breaks the pattern, while classification may also ask which group an item belongs to, and often uses a two-step rule.
How do I handle sets that mix letters and numbers?
Convert every letter to its alphabet position first. Once everything is numeric, the arithmetic link between the parts of each item usually becomes visible.
What if one rule leaves two possible answers?
Look for a second condition layered on the first, such as a letter gap combined with a starting vowel. SSC builds its harder questions from exactly this kind of double rule.
How long should a classification question take?
About 20 to 25 seconds. Together with analogy, these questions form the fastest block in the reasoning section and are best attempted before series and puzzles.
60-second recap
- Look for a stated, checkable property.
- One rule leaving two options means a second rule exists.
- Convert letters to positions in mixed sets.
- Verbal classification is faster than letter-pair classification.
- Attempt analogy and classification first in the section.

| 4, 9, 16, 20 | Perfect squares | 20 |
Agar ek niyam se do option bach jayein to doosra niyam dhoondho. SSC ke mushkil sawaal do shart ek saath lagate hain.
Frequently Asked Questions
60-second recap
