Cloze Test Approach
A cloze test is a short passage with several blanks and four options for each. Read the whole passage once before filling anything, because a later sentence often decides an earlier blank. Then fill the easiest blanks first and use them to establish the passage's direction.
The order of work
- Read the entire passage once, ignoring the blanks.
- Identify the subject and the writer's stance in one line.
- Fill the grammar-driven blanks first: articles, prepositions and verb forms.
- Then fill the meaning-driven blanks, using the sentences already completed.
- Re-read the finished passage quickly to check that it holds together.
Grammar blanks first, meaning blanks second, never left to right
Grammar before meaning
A blank after a preposition needs a noun or a gerund, a blank after an article needs a noun, and a blank following a subject needs a verb agreeing with it. Checking the part of speech eliminates two options in most blanks before meaning is considered at all.

Worked approach
Approach 1. If a blank follows the phrase in spite of, the sentence must contain a contrast, so the blank takes a word opposing the surrounding idea even if a supporting word also fits grammatically.
Approach 2. If two options are both grammatically possible and both fit the meaning, choose the one that matches the register of the passage. A formal passage takes the formal word.
Approach 3. If one blank resists after twenty seconds, leave it and complete the others. The finished sentences around it usually make the answer obvious on a second pass.
Common blank types
Most blanks fall into four groups. A verb blank is decided by tense and by agreement with the subject. A connector blank is decided by whether the two clauses agree or contrast. A preposition blank is decided by the fixed pairing with the verb before it. A vocabulary blank is decided by the sense of the sentence and is the only group needing real word knowledge. Recognising which group a blank belongs to before reading the options is what makes a cloze test fast rather than slow.

Meaning से पहले grammar
Preposition के बाद वाले blank में noun या gerund चाहिए, article के बाद वाले blank में noun चाहिए, और subject के बाद वाले blank में उससे agreement करने वाला verb चाहिए। Part of speech जाँच लेने भर से ज़्यादातर blanks में दो options पहले ही कट जाते हैं, meaning सोचने की नौबत ही नहीं आती।

हल करने का तरीका
तरीका 1. अगर blank phrase in spite of के बाद आता है, तो वाक्य में contrast ज़रूर होगा, इसलिए blank में आस-पास की बात के विपरीत शब्द आएगा, भले ही उसे सहारा देने वाला शब्द भी grammar के हिसाब से फिट बैठ रहा हो।
तरीका 2. अगर दो options grammar से भी सही हैं और meaning में भी फिट हैं, तो वही चुनें जो passage के register से मेल खाता है। Formal passage में formal शब्द ही आएगा।
तरीका 3. अगर कोई एक blank बीस सेकंड में नहीं बन रहा, तो उसे छोड़कर बाकी पूरे कर लें। आस-पास के पूरे हो चुके वाक्य दूसरी बार में उत्तर साफ़ कर देते हैं।
Blanks के आम प्रकार
ज़्यादातर blanks चार समूहों में आते हैं। Verb blank tense और subject से agreement देखकर तय होता है। Connector blank इससे तय होता है कि दोनों clauses एक ही बात कह रहे हैं या उलटी। Preposition blank उससे पहले वाले verb के साथ बंधे fixed pairing से तय होता है। Vocabulary blank वाक्य के अर्थ से तय होता है और यही अकेला समूह है जिसमें सचमुच शब्द-ज्ञान चाहिए। Options पढ़ने से पहले यह पहचान लेना कि blank किस समूह का है, यही cloze test को धीमा नहीं, तेज़ बनाता है।
