Cloze Test Strategy and Speed

Knowing the blank types is only half the battle; scoring well in SBI Clerk needs a plan for order, elimination and time. With English carrying a strict 20-minute sectional clock and a full cloze set worth 5 to 10 marks, how you move through the set matters as much as what you know. A disciplined order turns the cloze test from a slow slog into one of your fastest, most reliable blocks in the whole section.

Fill the Easy Blanks First

Never solve a cloze set strictly top to bottom. After your first read, go through and fill only the blanks you are sure of — the grammar and obvious meaning ones — and skip anything that needs thought. Each filled blank adds context that makes the remaining ones easier, so the hardest blank is often simple by the time you return to it. Solving easy-first also banks marks quickly, which protects your score if time runs short before you finish the set.

Elimination Beats Guessing

When a blank is not obvious, do not hunt for the perfect word — remove the wrong ones instead. Reject options that break grammar, clash with tone, or fail the collocation, and you are usually left with one or two. Between two survivors, read each into the sentence and keep the one that sounds natural. Elimination is faster and safer than trying to reason forward to a single answer, and it is the core method for every uncertain blank in the set.

Manage the Negative Marking

SBI Clerk deducts one-fourth mark for a wrong answer, so blind guessing hurts, but educated guessing pays. If you have cut four options down to two by elimination, attempt the blank — the odds now favour you even after the penalty. If all options still look equally possible, leave that single blank; one skipped blank will not sink a set where you have secured the rest. This judgement, applied blank by blank, keeps your accuracy high without leaving easy marks on the table.

Solved Example

Example: For a blank with options 'quickly, quick, quickness, quicker', the slot follows a verb and needs an adverb. Grammar removes three at once, leaving quickly. Elimination by part of speech cracked it in seconds without weighing meaning at all.

A 60-Second Set Routine

Build one repeatable routine and drill it in every mock: read the passage in thirty seconds, fill the certain blanks on a second pass, eliminate on the uncertain ones, and attempt only where you are down to two or fewer options. Reading the finished passage back once catches any word that broke the flow. Practised this way, a full cloze set takes three to four minutes and returns marks at a rate few other English blocks can match, freeing time for the rest of the section. Time the routine in every practice paper until it becomes automatic, so that on exam day you are executing a rehearsed sequence rather than deciding on the spot how to approach the set, which is exactly what keeps your nerve and your pace steady under the clock.

Exam Pointer — In SBI Clerk Prelims, the cloze set is a high-return block if you attack it with order and elimination rather than reading top to bottom. With 20 minutes for 30 English questions, aim to finish the set in three to four minutes. Attempt when you are down to two options, skip when every option is open, and let the 1/4 penalty guide the risky calls.

60-Second Recap

  • Fill certain blanks first; each one gives context for the rest.
  • Eliminate wrong options instead of hunting the perfect word.
  • Down to two options — attempt; all open — skip the penalty.
  • Drill one 3-to-4-minute set routine in every mock.
