EVS की अवधारणा और क्षेत्र

Concept and Scope of EVS

Environmental Studies is an integrated subject that studies the child's natural, physical and social environment as one whole. It is not science made easy and it is not social studies renamed; it is a single subject that draws on both, organised around themes from the child's own life.

How EVS is placed in the primary curriculum

  • In Classes 1 and 2 EVS is not taught as a separate subject. Environmental awareness is built through language and mathematics activities, as NCF 2005 recommends.
  • In Classes 3 to 5 EVS is a separate subject with its own textbook and periods.
  • From Class 6 it separates into science and social science.
  • The NCERT primary textbook series is named Looking Around, a title that states the method.

The six themes

ThemeWhat it covers
Family and FriendsRelationships, work and play, animals, plants, our body
FoodSources, cooking, nutrition, farming, sharing
ShelterHouses, materials, animal homes, neighbourhood
WaterSources, uses, the water cycle, scarcity, conservation
TravelTransport, journeys, maps, directions
Things We Make and DoOccupations, crafts, tools, communication, waste

The themes are deliberately drawn from everyday life so that the same topic can be entered from a science angle or a social angle, and so that a child's own experience is the first source of content.

Objectives of teaching EVS

  1. Develop the ability to observe, question, describe and classify the surroundings.
  2. Build sensitivity to the natural environment and to other people.
  3. Develop concern for the environment and the habit of acting on it.
  4. Connect school knowledge with the child's home and community knowledge.
  5. Lay a foundation for science and social science in the middle classes.

What EVS is not

It is not a list of facts to be memorised, and the textbook is not the syllabus. The environment itself is the primary textbook: the school ground, the lane, the pond, the market and the children's own families. A CTET answer that keeps children inside the book is almost always the wrong one.

EVS is a simplified form of science for young children.  |   EVS integrates science and social science around themes from the child's environment.

This topic gives 1-2 questions and is a favourite because candidates assume EVS is a separate subject from Class 1. Fix the placement: not separate in Classes 1-2, separate from Class 3 to 5, splitting from Class 6. The six themes are asked as a set and by name, so memorise them. Another item asks the nature of EVS, where the answer is always integrated and experience-based rather than informational.

Frequently asked questions

Is EVS taught as a separate subject in Classes 1 and 2?

No. In Classes 1 and 2 environmental awareness is built through language and mathematics activities, as recommended by NCF 2005. EVS becomes a separate subject with its own textbook only from Class 3.

What are the six themes of EVS?

Family and Friends, Food, Shelter, Water, Travel, and Things We Make and Do. All primary EVS content is organised around these themes drawn from the child's everyday environment.

How is EVS different from science?

EVS integrates the natural, physical and social environment into one subject organised by themes, whereas science studies the natural and physical world through its own disciplinary structure. EVS separates into science and social science from Class 6.
