Some cloze blanks are neither pure grammar nor single-word vocabulary — they test whether you have followed the logic and tone across sentences. Connector blanks ask for the linking word that joins two ideas correctly, and contextual blanks ask for a word that keeps the passage consistent. Both are decided by the relationship between ideas, so once you read that relationship, the answer is fixed. These blanks separate careful readers from careless ones.

Contrast, Cause and Continuation

Connectors fall into a few logical families, and naming the relationship tells you the word. If the second idea opposes the first, you need a contrast word — 'however', 'although', 'but', 'despite'. If the first idea causes the second, you need 'therefore', 'so' or 'as a result'. If it simply adds more, you need 'and', 'moreover' or 'in addition'. Read the two ideas, decide whether they clash, cause or continue, and the correct connector chooses itself.

However vs Although: Placement Matters

Contrast connectors are not interchangeable, and the exam exploits this. 'Although' joins two clauses inside one sentence ('Although it rained, we played'), while 'however' usually starts a new sentence and takes a comma ('It rained. However, we played'). 'Despite' is followed by a noun, not a full clause ('despite the rain'). When several contrast words are offered, the grammar of the slot — clause, new sentence or noun — decides which one is correct, so check the structure, not just the meaning.

Keeping Tone Consistent

Contextual blanks test whether your word keeps the passage's tone steady. A formal report will not suddenly take a casual word, and a hopeful paragraph will not take a bleak one. When an option is grammatically fine but clashes in tone with the sentences around it, reject it. Reading the sentence before and the sentence after the blank, not just the blank's own line, is what keeps you from breaking the passage's consistent voice, which is exactly what these blanks are checking.

In practice, most candidates lose these marks not because the connector is difficult but because they judged it from a single line and never checked how the two ideas actually related. Slow down for the few seconds a read-around takes, and you convert the riskiest blanks in the set into some of the surest, because a clearly named relationship leaves only one connector standing.
