Counting Figures

Counting figure questions ask how many triangles, squares or rectangles a diagram contains. Count by size, smallest first, then combinations, rather than randomly. For grids, two formulas replace counting entirely, which is why grid questions should always be answered by formula.

Grid formulas

Squares in an n by n grid = n(n + 1)(2n + 1)/6

Rectangles in an m by n grid = [m(m+1)/2] x [n(n+1)/2]

For a 3 by 3 grid, the squares total 14 and the rectangles total 36. The rectangle count includes the squares, which is the distinction most often missed.

Counting triangles systematically

  1. Count the smallest triangles first and write the number down.
  2. Count triangles made of two smallest triangles.
  3. Count those made of three, then four, and so on.
  4. Add the totals; never count in a random order.

Count by size class and add; random counting always misses overlaps

Worked approach

Approach 1. In a triangle divided by three lines from one vertex, count the four smallest triangles, then those formed by pairs, then by triples, and finally the whole. Writing each size class on its own line prevents double counting.

Approach 2. For a 4 by 4 grid, apply the square formula: 4 times 5 times 9, divided by 6, which gives 30. Counting by hand would take two minutes and still risk an error.

Approach 3. For rectangles in a 3 by 3 grid, apply the formula: 6 times 6 = 36. Since squares are also rectangles, the 14 squares are already included in that total.

Why hand counting fails

Counting at random misses the medium-sized figures formed by combining smaller ones, which is where most of the count usually sits. In a triangle split by three cevians, the smallest triangles are obvious and the combined ones are not, so the class-by-class method is not a preference but a requirement.

Exam pointer — Counting figures appears in about 1 question per shift and is the slowest non-verbal type at 45 to 60 seconds for a hand-counted figure. Grid questions are the exception at 15 seconds with the formula. Under the sectional timer, attempt the grid version and treat an irregular hand-counting figure as a skip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many squares are there in a 3 by 3 grid?

There are 14: nine of size one, four of size two and one of size three. The formula n times n plus 1 times 2n plus 1, divided by 6, gives this directly.

How many rectangles are in a 3 by 3 grid?

There are 36, found by multiplying 6 by 6 using the formula. This total already includes all 14 squares, since every square is also a rectangle.

What is the best way to count triangles?

Count by size class: all the smallest triangles first, then those made of two, then three, and so on. Adding the class totals avoids the double counting that random scanning causes.

Should I attempt every counting figure question?

Attempt grid-based ones, which take 15 seconds with a formula. An irregular figure needing hand counting can take a minute and is a reasonable skip under the sectional timer.

60-second recap

  • Squares in n by n = n(n+1)(2n+1)/6.
  • Rectangles = [m(m+1)/2] x [n(n+1)/2].
  • 3 by 3 grid: 14 squares, 36 rectangles.
  • Every square counts as a rectangle.
  • Count triangles by size class, never randomly.

n by n grid में squares = n(n + 1)(2n + 1)/6

m by n grid में rectangles = [m(m+1)/2] x [n(n+1)/2]

Frequently Asked Questions
