Introduction to Data Interpretation and Approach

Data Interpretation, or DI, is the highest-value block in SBI Clerk Numerical Ability, usually worth 5 to 10 marks packed into one or two sets. Each set gives you a chart or table and four to five questions built on it. Because the calculations reuse the same figures, a smart approach lets you answer a whole set in the time a careless candidate spends on two questions. That leverage is why DI deserves a disciplined method rather than raw effort.

What DI Actually Tests

DI is not advanced maths; it is percentage, ratio and average applied quickly to given numbers. The exam tests whether you can read a chart accurately, pick only the figures a question needs, and calculate them without error under time pressure. Every DI question reduces to one of a few operations — find the total, find a percentage, compare two quantities, or compute an average — so recognising the operation instantly is half the battle.

The Read-First Rule

Before touching any question, spend ten seconds reading the chart's title, units and labels. Candidates lose easy marks by missing that a figure is in thousands, or that a bar shows a percentage rather than a count. Understanding exactly what the numbers represent prevents the single most damaging DI error: solving correctly for the wrong quantity. This short pause pays for itself many times over across the set.

Approximate, Then Refine

Most DI options are spread widely enough that approximation gets you the answer. Round messy figures to convenient numbers, compute quickly, and only refine if two options sit close together. Combined with the percentage-to-fraction conversions from the simplification chapter, this turns a heavy-looking calculation into a mental one. Speed in DI comes from confident rounding, not from grinding exact arithmetic.

Solved Example

Example: A table shows a shop sold 1,240 units in May and 1,560 in June. The percentage increase is (320 / 1240) × 100. Round to 320 / 1250 = 25.6%, close to 26% — no long division needed.

Dividing 320 by 1240 with full long division  |   Rounding to 320 / 1250 ≈ 25.6% for a quick answer

Choosing Which Set to Attempt

When a paper offers two DI sets, spend the first fifteen seconds deciding which to attempt, because the choice matters more than raw speed. Favour the set with round numbers, a clear chart and question types you find comfortable, and be wary of a set whose figures are awkward multi-digit values or whose questions demand combining several slices. A well-chosen set of five questions can be cleared in under three minutes, while a badly chosen one can swallow five minutes and still yield errors. Treat set selection as a skill in its own right and practise it in every mock, so that on exam day you instinctively walk toward the marks that come easiest and leave the trap set for last.

DI उन्नत गणित नहीं है — यह दिए गए आँकड़ों पर प्रतिशत, अनुपात और औसत है। पहले चार्ट का शीर्षक और इकाई पढ़ें, फिर अनुमान लगाकर हल करें।

Exam Pointer — SBI Clerk sets one or two DI sets, often the most mark-dense block in the section. Pick the set with the friendliest numbers first. Never abandon a DI set after one hard question — the remaining questions in the same set often reuse figures you have already calculated, so partial work carries forward.

60-Second Recap

  • DI is percentage, ratio and average on given data.
  • Read title, units and labels before solving.
  • Round aggressively; options are usually far apart.
  • 5–10 marks in one or two sets — attempt the easier set first.
