Delhi Sultanate

The Delhi Sultanate ran from 1206 to 1526 through five dynasties: Slave, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi. SSC asks the order of the dynasties, the ruler behind a specific reform, and which ruler is linked to which building or currency.

The five dynasties in order

DynastyFounderRemembered for
Slave, from 1206Qutbuddin AibakBegan the Qutub Minar
Khalji, from 1290Jalaluddin KhaljiAlauddin's market control
Tughlaq, from 1320Ghiyasuddin TughlaqCapital shift and token currency
Sayyid, from 1414Khizr KhanWeakest phase

Rulers worth knowing individually

  • Iltutmish introduced the silver tanka and the copper jital, and completed the Qutub Minar.
  • Razia Sultan was the only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate.
  • Balban enforced the court practices of sijda and paibos.
  • Alauddin Khalji fixed market prices and sent Malik Kafur into the Deccan.
  • Muhammad bin Tughlaq shifted the capital to Daulatabad and issued token currency.
  • Firoz Shah Tughlaq built canals and founded several towns.

Ibrahim Lodi lost the First Battle of Panipat to Babur in 1526

Do Tughlaq alag-alag hain. Muhammad bin Tughlaq ne raajdhani badli aur token currency chalayi; Firoz Shah ne nahar banwaayi.

Administration and architecture

The Sultanate divided its territory into iqtas, assignments of revenue given to nobles in return for military service, and this system shaped the politics of the whole period. Land revenue, called kharaj, was the main source of income, and Alauddin Khalji raised it sharply while enforcing his price controls in the Delhi markets. In architecture, the period introduced the true arch and the dome, seen in the Qutub Minar complex and the Alai Darwaza built by Alauddin Khalji. The Tughlaq period added the fortress cities of Tughlaqabad and Firozabad. The Sultanate also saw the growth of the Bhakti and Sufi movements, with figures such as Kabir and Nizamuddin Auliya, whose teachings SSC treats as a separate cluster of one-line questions.

Solved examples

Example 2. Who introduced market price control? Alauddin Khalji.

Example 3. Who shifted the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad? Muhammad bin Tughlaq.

Example 4. Who completed the Qutub Minar? Iltutmish, after Aibak began it.

Example 5. What was an iqta? A revenue assignment granted to a noble in return for military service.

Traps SSC repeats

Firoz Shah Tughlaq issued token currency  |   Muhammad bin Tughlaq did

Qutbuddin Aibak completed the Qutub Minar  |   He began it; Iltutmish completed it

Exam pointer — Medieval history gives 1 to 2 questions per shift and the Sultanate is the more predictable half, because the questions are ruler-and-reform matches. Target 10 seconds each. The two Tughlaqs and the Aibak-Iltutmish pairing account for most of the wrong answers, so fix those two distinctions first.

  • Razia Sultan
  • Firoz Shah Tughlaq

Ibrahim Lodi 1526 में First Battle of Panipat में Babur से हारा

Example 1.

Example 2.

Example 3.

Example 4.

Example 5. iqta
