Discussion and CCE in EVS

Discussion is the main classroom method in EVS because many of its questions have more than one honest answer. Assessment follows the same logic: what is judged is a child's ability to observe, question, explain and care, none of which a one-word answer can show.

Why discussion suits EVS

• Questions such as who does the housework, or why some homes have no tap, have no single textbook answer.
• Children bring different family practices, foods, festivals and languages into the room, and comparing them is the lesson.
• Discussion turns the child's home knowledge into legitimate classroom content.
• It builds the language of reasoning — because, so, but, if — which supports every other subject.

Running a discussion well

1. Ask an open question with no single right answer.
2. Give thinking time before any hand goes up.
3. Let children talk in pairs first, so quiet children rehearse an answer.
4. Accept every contribution, then ask the child to explain it.
5. Do not close the discussion by announcing the correct view.
6. Record the range of answers on the board so difference is visible and respected.

What EVS assessment must cover

CCE tools in EVS

Anecdotal records, checklists, rating scales, portfolios of drawings and reports, project work and oral questioning are the appropriate tools. A written test can check some knowledge but cannot judge whether a child notices things, asks questions or handles material with care — which is most of what EVS is for.

The open-ended question is the single best EVS assessment item: 'why do you think the pond dries up in summer?' reveals reasoning, misconceptions and vocabulary in one answer.
