त्रुटि विश्लेषण और उपचारात्मक शिक्षण
Error Analysis and Remedial
Error analysis is the study of a child's mistakes to find the thinking behind them. In modern pedagogy an error is not a failure to be marked wrong but evidence of the rule the child is actually using. Remedial teaching then targets that rule instead of repeating the whole lesson.
Errors are systematic, not random
A child who writes 42 - 17 = 35 has not been careless. He has applied a consistent rule: subtract the smaller digit from the larger in each column. Until that rule is addressed, more practice only makes it stronger.
- 'I goed to school' — the child has learnt the past tense rule and over-generalised it. This is a sign of learning, not of ignorance.
- A Class 3 child writes 305 as 3005 — the place value of zero has not been built.
- A child reads 'saw' as 'was' — visual sequencing rather than carelessness.
The steps of remedial teaching
- Identify — spot the weak children and the weak areas from class work, not only from tests.
- Diagnose — use a diagnostic test or an interview to find the exact step where the process fails.
- Analyse the cause — is it a concept gap, a language problem, an earlier missing skill, poor attendance or a sensory difficulty?
- Plan — set a small, specific target with material suited to it.
- Teach differently — a new route, usually more concrete; repeating the same explanation louder is not remedial teaching.
- Re-test and follow up — check whether the target was met and continue.
What good remedial teaching looks like
- It happens close to the error in time, not at the end of the term.
- It works on the exact sub-skill, such as regrouping in subtraction, not on 'maths'.
- It uses concrete material and the child's own language.
- It is given in small groups or individually inside the school day, not as extra homework.
- It is confidential — a remedial group must never become a label.
✗ Mark the sum wrong and ask the child to do ten more. | ✓ Ask how the child got the answer, find the faulty rule and reteach that step.
✗ Errors show that the child was not paying attention. | ✓ Most errors are systematic and reveal the rule the child is using.
संकेत: त्रुटि विश्लेषण (error analysis) = गलती के पीछे की सोच पकड़ना; उपचारात्मक शिक्षण उसी सोच को ठीक करता है, पूरा पाठ दोहराता नहीं।
This is high-yield across CDP, Maths pedagogy and Language pedagogy — expect 2-3 questions in the whole paper. Nearly every item describes a child's wrong answer and asks what the teacher should conclude or do. The correct option treats the error as meaningful and probes the reasoning; wrong options punish, ignore, or prescribe more of the same practice. In language items, remember over-generalisation such as 'goed' or 'mouses' is evidence that the rule has been internalised.
Frequently asked questions
Why are children's errors considered important in modern pedagogy?
Because errors are usually systematic and reveal the rule a child is applying. Studying them tells the teacher exactly what to reteach, which is far more useful than simply recording an answer as wrong.
What are the steps of remedial teaching?
Identify the weak area, diagnose the exact point of failure, analyse the cause, plan a small specific target, teach through a different and more concrete route, then re-test and follow up.
How is remedial teaching different from extra homework?
Remedial teaching changes the method and works on a precisely identified sub-skill with the teacher present. Extra homework repeats the same task in the same way, usually without support, and tends to reinforce the original error.
60-second recap
- Errors are systematic evidence of the child's current rule, not carelessness.
- Over-generalisation such as 'goed' shows a rule has been learnt.
- Remedial steps: identify, diagnose, analyse cause, plan, reteach differently, follow up.
- Remedial work targets a sub-skill, uses concrete material, and stays confidential.
- More of the same practice strengthens the wrong rule.
