Evaluation in mathematics must check understanding, reasoning and application, not only the right answer. A child who reaches the correct result by a wrong method and one who reaches a wrong result by sound reasoning need very different responses, and only a method-aware assessment can tell them apart.
What to assess
- Concepts — does the child know what division means, or only how to do it?
- Procedures — can the steps be carried out accurately?
- Problem solving — can a real situation be turned into mathematics?
- Reasoning and justification — can the child say why the answer is right?
- Attitude — is the child willing to attempt an unfamiliar problem?

Setting better questions
- Ask for the method: 'show two different ways to find the answer'.
- Ask for a judgement: 'is 4.5 closer to 4 or to 5, and how do you know?'
- Ask the child to frame a problem for a given number sentence.
- Ask for an estimate before the exact calculation.
- Use open questions with more than one correct answer: 'write three fractions greater than 1/2'.
An open question of this kind reveals more in one minute than ten closed sums, because it exposes the range of the child's thinking rather than a single point.
Marking that helps
Give method marks and comment on the step where the reasoning broke. A cross with no explanation tells the child only that she failed. A note reading 'your regrouping in the tens column needs checking' tells her exactly what to do next, and turns the test into formative assessment.
