Genetics and Evolution

Gregor Mendel is called the father of genetics for his experiments on pea plants. DNA carries hereditary information, and its double helix structure was described by Watson and Crick in 1953. Humans have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs.

Mendel and heredity

  • Mendel worked on the garden pea and established the basic laws of inheritance.
  • A gene is the unit of heredity, carried on chromosomes.
  • Dominant traits appear in the offspring while recessive traits may remain hidden.
  • Genotype is the genetic makeup and phenotype is the visible appearance.

DNA is deoxyribonucleic acid; its double helix was described by Watson and Crick in 1953

Chromosomes and sex determination

Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, of which one pair determines sex. A female has two X chromosomes and a male has one X and one Y, which means the sex of a child is determined by the father, since only he can contribute a Y chromosome.

ParentSex chromosomesContribution
MotherXXAlways contributes an X
FatherXYContributes either X or Y

Genetic disorders and blood group inheritance

Some conditions are inherited through genes rather than caused by infection. Colour blindness and haemophilia are sex-linked and appear far more often in males, because the relevant gene lies on the X chromosome and males carry only one copy of it. Blood groups are also inherited, following the A, B and O gene system discovered through Landsteiner's work. Down syndrome results from an extra chromosome rather than from a single faulty gene. SSC asks which conditions are hereditary and which are sex-linked, so grouping them by that distinction is the useful way to revise this part.

Solved examples

Example 1. Who is called the father of genetics? Gregor Mendel.

Example 2. How many chromosomes does a human being have? 46, in 23 pairs.

Example 3. Who determines the sex of a child? The father, since only he can pass on a Y chromosome.

Example 4. Who described the structure of DNA? Watson and Crick, in 1953.

Traps SSC repeats

The mother determines the sex of the child  |   The father does, through the X or Y chromosome

Humans have 46 pairs of chromosomes  |   They have 46 chromosomes, which is 23 pairs

Exam pointer — Genetics gives under 1 question per shift on average, but the questions that do appear are highly predictable: Mendel, the chromosome count, sex determination or Darwin. All take 10 seconds. This is a short topic with a good return for the small amount of memorising involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is known as the father of genetics?

Gregor Mendel, who established the laws of inheritance through his experiments on garden pea plants in the nineteenth century.

How many chromosomes do humans have?

Forty-six, arranged in twenty-three pairs. One of those pairs determines sex, with XX in females and XY in males.

Who determines the sex of a child?

The father, because the mother always contributes an X chromosome while the father may contribute either an X or a Y.

Who proposed the theory of natural selection?

Charles Darwin, in On the Origin of Species published in 1859. Lamarck's earlier theory of the inheritance of acquired characters was later rejected.

  • Humans have 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs.
  • The father determines the sex of the child.

Mendel

Frequently Asked Questions
