Gupta and Post-Gupta
The Gupta empire, from the early fourth century CE, is called the golden age of ancient India for its achievements in mathematics, astronomy and literature. SSC focuses on three things: which ruler is linked to which achievement, which Chinese traveller visited whom, and Harshavardhana's defeat on the Narmada.
The main Gupta rulers
| Ruler | Known for | Associated name |
|---|---|---|
| Chandragupta I | Started the Gupta era | Took the title Maharajadhiraja |
| Samudragupta | Wide conquests | Prayag Prashasti by Harisena |
| Chandragupta II | Peak of the empire | Title Vikramaditya |
| Kumaragupta I | Founded Nalanda university | Long reign |
Fa-Hien visited during Chandragupta II; Hiuen Tsang visited during Harshavardhana
Scholars of the age
- Aryabhata, author of the Aryabhatiya, who worked on the value of pi and on astronomy.
- Kalidasa, author of Abhijnanashakuntalam and Meghadutam.
- Varahamihira, author of the Brihat Samhita.
- The Iron Pillar at Mehrauli in Delhi, notable for its rust resistance.
Harshavardhana
Harshavardhana ruled from Kannauj in the seventh century. His court poet Bana wrote the Harshacharita, and the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang visited his kingdom. He was defeated by the Chalukya ruler Pulakeshin II on the banks of the Narmada, which halted his expansion southwards.
Do Chinese yatri alag hain - Fa-Hien Chandragupta II ke samay aaye aur Hiuen Tsang Harshavardhan ke samay. SSC inhi ko aapas me badal kar poochta hai.
Administration and economy
Gupta administration was more decentralised than the Mauryan system. Provinces were called bhuktis and districts vishayas, and land grants to officials and religious institutions became common, which gradually built up a class of intermediaries between the state and the cultivator. The period is also known for its gold coins, called dinaras, whose designs show rulers in a variety of poses, and for the growth of Sanskrit as the language of administration and literature. Temple architecture in the nagara style began to take shape in this period, and the murals at Ajanta belong largely to the same centuries. After the Gupta decline, north India fragmented, and Harshavardhana's seventh-century kingdom at Kannauj was the last large northern state before the regional powers of the early medieval period emerged.

Traps SSC repeats
✗ Hiuen Tsang visited Chandragupta II | ✓ He visited Harshavardhana; Fa-Hien visited Chandragupta II
✗ Nalanda was founded by Ashoka | ✓ It was founded by Kumaragupta I
Exam pointer — The Gupta period gives about 1 question per shift, usually a ruler-and-achievement match or a traveller pairing. These are 10-second recall questions. Since ancient and medieval history together supply 3 to 4 marks, the tables in this chapter are worth revising the night before the exam.

Prayag Prashasti |
| Kumaragupta I | Nalanda university
- Varahamihira, Brihat Samhita
Harshavardhana
Do Chinese yatri alag hain - Fa-Hien Chandragupta II ke samay aaye aur Hiuen Tsang Harshavardhan ke samay. SSC inhi ko aapas me badal kar poochta hai.

Example 3.
Example 4.
