Length, Weight, Capacity

Measurement means comparing a quantity with a chosen unit. Children first measure with non-standard units — handspans, footsteps, cups — and then discover why standard units are needed. The metric system, based on tens, is what Classes 1 to 5 use.

The same prefixes run through all three: kilo means a thousand, centi means a hundredth, milli means a thousandth. Learning the prefixes once removes the need to memorise three separate tables.

Why non-standard units come first

A Class 2 child who measures the desk in handspans and finds a different answer from her partner has discovered, on her own, why a standard unit is necessary. Telling her would have taught nothing. This sequence — non-standard, then standard — is prescribed in the syllabus and is asked as a pedagogy question.

Estimation before measurement

  • Ask for an estimate first, then measure, then compare. Estimation builds a feel for size that no conversion table gives.
  • Useful anchors for Classes 3-5: a doorway is about 2 m high, a fingernail is about 1 cm wide, a bag of rice is 5 kg, a water bottle holds 1 litre.
  • Estimation also catches absurd answers: a pencil cannot be 15 metres long.

Choosing the right unit

A question often turns on which unit fits the quantity. Distance between two towns is in kilometres, the height of a child in centimetres, the thickness of a coin in millimetres. A bag of cement is in kilograms, a tablet in milligrams, and medicine in a spoon is in millilitres. Asking children to pick the unit before measuring is a quick daily exercise that removes most conversion errors later.

Common errors

2 km 50 m = 2.50 km  |   2 km 50 m = 2.050 km, because 50 m is 50 thousandths of a kilometre.

Weight and mass are the same thing.  |   Mass is the amount of matter; weight is the pull of gravity on it. Primary syllabus uses weight loosely, but the distinction is asked in EVS.

Measurement supplies 1-2 questions, usually a conversion inside a word problem. The most repeated trap is a conversion with a mixed unit such as 2 km 50 m, where candidates place the decimal point two places instead of three. A pedagogy item almost always accompanies it, asking why non-standard units are used first; the answer is that the child discovers the need for a standard unit through the variation in her own results.

Why should children measure with non-standard units first?

Because comparing their differing results makes children see for themselves why a common standard unit is necessary. Being told the reason teaches the words; discovering the variation teaches the idea.

How many grams are there in a quintal?

One hundred thousand grams. A quintal equals 100 kilograms, and each kilogram equals 1000 grams, so a quintal is 100 times 1000, that is 1,00,000 grams.

What is the difference between mass and weight?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object and stays the same everywhere, measured in kilograms. Weight is the force of gravity acting on that mass and changes with location, though primary textbooks use the word weight for both.
