Marked Price and Dealer
Marked price is the label price before discount. Discount is calculated on the marked price, while profit is calculated on the cost price. A dishonest dealer question adds a false weight, where the gain comes from the shortfall: error divided by true weight minus error, times 100.
The three prices in one chain
CP -> mark up -> MP -> discount -> SP
Every marked-price question is this chain read forwards or backwards. Write the chain down before substituting, because candidates lose marks by applying the discount to the cost price.
SP = MP x (100 - discount%)/100
Mark up and discount together
When goods are marked up by x percent above cost and then a discount of y percent is given, the net profit follows the same successive-change formula, with the discount entered as negative.
Net profit% = x - y - (x x y)/100
The dishonest dealer
A dealer who sells at cost price but uses a lighter weight still profits. The gain rests on how much less the customer actually receives.
Gain% = error/(true value - error) x 100
Solved examples
Example 1. An article costing Rs 500 is marked 40 percent above cost and sold at a 25 percent discount. Find the profit percentage. Net = 40 minus 25 minus (40 times 25)/100 = 15 minus 10 = 5 percent.
Example 2. A shopkeeper claims to sell at cost price but uses a 900 gram weight for a kilogram. Find his gain. Error is 100 grams, so gain = 100 divided by 900, times 100 = 11.11 percent.
Example 3. The marked price of a fan is Rs 3000 and it is sold for Rs 2400. Find the discount percentage. The discount is 600 on 3000, which is 20 percent.
Example 4. A trader marks his goods 25 percent above cost and gives a discount such that he still gains 10 percent. Find the discount. Take cost as 100, so the marked price is 125 and the selling price is 110. The discount is 15 on 125, which is 12 percent.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Discount is calculated on the cost price | ✓ Discount is always on the marked price
✗ A 900 gram weight gives a 10% gain | ✓ It gives 11.11%, since the base is 900
Discount hamesha marked price par lagta hai aur profit hamesha cost price par. Yahi ek line aadhe sawaalon ki galti rok deti hai.
Exam pointer — Expect 1 question, most often the mark-up-with-discount type or the false-weight dealer. Both are formula questions worth 30 seconds. The chained version, which gives the cost price and the final selling price and asks for the mark-up, needs the assume-100 method and takes about 45 seconds, so judge it against the sectional clock before starting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is discount calculated on the marked price or the cost price?
Always on the marked price. Profit and loss, by contrast, are always calculated on the cost price. Mixing the two bases is the single most common error in this topic.
What is the formula for a dishonest dealer using a false weight?
The gain percentage is the error divided by the true value minus the error, multiplied by 100. Using a 900 gram weight for a kilogram gives 100 over 900, or 11.11 percent.
How do I combine a mark-up with a discount?
Use the successive change formula with the discount as a negative value: net profit equals x minus y minus xy over 100, where x is the mark-up and y is the discount.
How do I find the discount when the mark-up and profit are known?
Take the cost price as 100, work out the marked price from the mark-up and the selling price from the profit, then express the difference as a percentage of the marked price.
60-second recap
- Chain: CP, mark up, MP, discount, SP.
- Discount is on MP; profit is on CP.
- Mark up x with discount y gives x - y - xy/100.
- False weight gain = error/(true - error) x 100.
- A 900 g weight gives 11.11 percent, not 10 percent.

CP → mark up → MP → discount → SP
SP = MP x (100 - discount%)/100
Net profit% = x - y - (x x y)/100
Gain% = error/(true value - error) x 100
Discount hamesha marked price par lagta hai aur profit hamesha cost price par. Yahi ek line aadhe sawaalon ki galti rok deti hai.
Frequently Asked Questions
60-second recap
- श्रृंखला: CP, mark up, MP, discount, SP।
- x का mark up और y का discount देता है x - y - xy/100।
