Maslow's Hierarchy

Abraham Maslow arranged human needs in a pyramid of five levels: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation. Lower needs must be reasonably satisfied before higher ones motivate behaviour. A hungry or frightened child cannot be motivated by praise or by curiosity.

The five levels

LevelNeedIn the classroom
1Physiological — food, water, sleep, restMid-day meal, drinking water, a short break
2Safety — security, order, freedom from fearNo corporal punishment, predictable routine, no bullying
3Love and belonging — affection, acceptanceBeing called by name, having a group to sit with
4Esteem — respect, recognition, competenceWork displayed, responsibility given, effort noticed
5Self-actualisation — becoming all one can beA child pursuing drawing or reading for its own sake

The first four are called deficiency needs — they push the person when they are missing and quieten when they are met. The fifth is a growth need and never gets fully satisfied; it grows stronger as it is fed.

Why the order matters to a primary teacher

Maslow is not an abstract theory in an Indian government school; it is a daily fact. A Class 2 child who walked three kilometres without breakfast is not being lazy at 9.30 a.m. A child mocked for her clothes is defending her belonging need, not being defiant. Before diagnosing a motivation problem, check the level below.

  • Mid-day meal timing changes attention in the first two periods.
  • A child who fears being beaten cannot attend to a lesson — fear occupies the whole mind.
  • A newly admitted migrant child needs a seat partner before she needs a lesson.

Later additions and criticism

Maslow later added cognitive needs (to know and understand), aesthetic needs (order and beauty) and self-transcendence above esteem. The main criticism is that the order is not rigid — artists and freedom fighters have pursued higher goals while hungry — and that the model is built on an individualistic western picture of the self.

A child who does not do homework is simply unmotivated.  |   Check the lower needs first — hunger, fear, exclusion — before calling it low motivation.

Maslow gives 1-2 questions. The commonest form describes a classroom situation and asks which need is operating, or asks which need comes immediately after another. Learn the order by number, because options often present the correct names in a wrong sequence. The repeated trap places esteem below belonging or puts safety at the very base — physiological is always first. Also remember self-actualisation is the only growth need; the other four are deficiency needs.

Frequently asked questions

What are the five levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs?

Physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualisation, in that order from the base upwards. The lower four are deficiency needs and the highest is a growth need.

Why is Maslow's theory important for teachers?

Because it explains why children who are hungry, frightened or excluded cannot be reached by academic incentives. It directs the teacher to secure food, safety and belonging before expecting achievement motivation.

What is self-actualisation in simple words?

It is the drive to use one's abilities fully and become the best one is capable of being. In a primary class it shows as a child who draws, reads or builds things for the satisfaction of doing them, without any reward.

60-second recap

  • Five levels: physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, self-actualisation.
  • Lower needs must be reasonably met before higher ones motivate.
  • First four are deficiency needs; the fifth is a growth need.
  • Hunger, fear and exclusion explain most 'lack of motivation' in primary classes.
  • Later additions: cognitive, aesthetic and self-transcendence needs.
