Mirror Images
A mirror image reverses left and right while keeping top and bottom unchanged. This is called lateral inversion. Letters symmetric about a vertical axis, such as A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y, look identical in a mirror, which is the fastest way to eliminate options.

The mirror clock formula

For a time exactly on the hour, subtract from 12:00 instead. The formula works because a mirror reflects the clock face about the vertical line through 12 and 6.

Mirror on the top or bottom
Some questions place the mirror above or below the figure instead of beside it. In that case the reflection flips top and bottom, which produces a water image rather than a mirror image. Read the position of the mirror in the question before applying any rule.
