Money, Banking and RBI
The Reserve Bank of India began operations on 1 April 1935 and was nationalised in 1949. It is the monetary authority, the banker to the government and the issuer of currency, though the one rupee note is issued by the Ministry of Finance, which is a favourite SSC question.
Functions of the RBI
- Formulates and implements monetary policy.
- Issues currency notes, other than the one rupee note.
- Acts as banker to the government and to commercial banks.
- Manages foreign exchange reserves.
- Regulates and supervises the banking system.
The RBI was established on 1 April 1935 and nationalised in 1949; its headquarters is in Mumbai

| CRR | Share of deposits kept as cash with the RBI | Reduces lendable funds |
| SLR | Share of deposits held in specified assets | Reduces lendable funds |
| Bank rate | Long-term lending rate of the RBI | Signals policy stance |
Monetary policy is decided by the Monetary Policy Committee, which has six members, half of them from the RBI and half appointed by the government.

Measures of money supply
The RBI publishes four measures of money supply. M1 covers currency with the public along with demand deposits and is called narrow money. M3, which adds time deposits with banks, is called broad money and is the aggregate most often referred to in policy discussion. Questions ask which is narrow and which is broad money far more often than they ask for the full definitions, so the pairing of M1 with narrow money and M3 with broad money is the useful thing to remember here.

Reserve Bank of India
| Bank rate | RBI
