The National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage, released by NCERT in 2022, is the first of the new frameworks under NEP 2020. It covers children from three to eight years — pre-school, Anganwadi, Bal Vatika and Classes 1 and 2 — and it is the framework most directly relevant to a CTET Paper 1 teacher.
What it covers and how it is organised
- Age group 3 to 8 years, bringing pre-school and the first two school years under one curriculum for the first time.
- Three broad developmental goals: children maintain good health and well-being; children become effective communicators; children become involved learners and connect with their immediate environment.
- Development described across the domains of physical, socio-emotional and ethical, cognitive, language and literacy, and aesthetic and cultural development.
- The Panchakosha idea of five-fold development is used as the organising image: sharirik (physical), pranik (life energy), manasik (mental and emotional), bauddhik (intellectual) and chaitsik (spiritual).
Pedagogy: play is the method
The framework is explicit that play is the primary method of learning at this stage. Recommended approaches include conversation, stories, songs, music, movement, art and craft, games, toys, puppets, field trips and learning in and from nature. Formal worksheets, copying and drill are contrary to its spirit.

Where it fits with NEP and NIPUN
The three documents work as one chain. NEP 2020 created the Foundational Stage, NCF-FS 2022 tells a teacher what to do inside it, and NIPUN Bharat sets the target that every child should attain foundational literacy and numeracy by the end of Grade 3. A CTET question that mentions any one of them is usually testing whether you can place the other two.
Assessment at the foundational stage
Assessment is described as an enabler of learning. It is done through careful and systematic observation of the child at work and analysis of the child's own products — drawings, constructions, oral retelling — recorded over time. No written tests, no ranking and no comparison between children.

NCF-FS 2022 is new in CTET syllabuses and appears once in most cycles, usually as the age group it covers or as the correct pedagogy for this stage. Fix 3 to 8 years, because the trap gives 6 to 8 or 3 to 6. The three developmental goals are asked as a set, so learn them as health and well-being, effective communicators, involved learners. Any option describing formal drill, written examination or ranking at this stage is wrong by definition.
