Number Series
A number series follows one hidden rule. Write the differences between consecutive terms first: if they are constant, the rule is addition, and if they themselves form a pattern, take the second differences. If the numbers grow fast, test multiplication instead of addition.
The order to test patterns
- First differences. Constant means simple addition or subtraction.
- Second differences. A pattern here means the first differences are themselves a series.
- Ratios. If terms roughly double or triple, test multiplication.
- Squares and cubes, including plus or minus a small constant.
- Alternating rules, where odd and even positions follow different patterns.
Reading the growth rate
Slow growth means addition; fast growth means multiplication or powers
This single judgement saves the most time. A series moving from 3 to 6 to 12 to 24 is clearly multiplicative, so never spend time on differences there.
Alternating series
Some series interleave two rules. In 2, 5, 4, 10, 6, 20 the odd positions rise by 2 while the even positions double. Whenever the differences look erratic, split the series into odd and even positions before concluding that there is no pattern.
Erratic differences usually mean two rules interleaved
Solved examples
Example 1. Find the next term: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30. The differences are 4, 6, 8 and 10, rising by 2 each time, so the next difference is 12 and the answer is 42.
Example 2. Find the next term: 5, 11, 23, 47. Each term is twice the previous plus 1, so the answer is 95.
Example 3. Find the next term: 1, 8, 27, 64. These are the cubes of 1, 2, 3 and 4, so the answer is 125.
Example 4. Find the next term: 120, 99, 80, 63, 48. The differences are minus 21, 19, 17 and 15, so the next is minus 13, giving 35.
Example 5. Find the next term: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13. These are consecutive prime numbers, so the answer is 17.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Force an addition rule on a fast-growing series | ✓ Test multiplication when terms roughly double
✗ Assume the differences must be constant | ✓ They often form a series of their own
Pehle antar likho. Antar barabar hai to jodna hai, antar khud badhta hai to doosra antar dekho, aur agar sankhya tezi se badh rahi hai to guna aazmao.
Exam pointer — Series gives 2 to 3 questions in the reasoning section, and number series is the larger share. A recognisable series takes 25 seconds; one that resists two rounds of testing will usually take over a minute, so mark it and return. Under a 15-minute sectional timer, one stubborn series question can cost you two easy analogy marks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the pattern in a number series?
Write the differences between consecutive terms first. If they are constant the rule is addition; if they form their own pattern, take second differences. Test multiplication when the terms grow quickly.
What are the most common number series patterns in SSC?
Constant differences, differences that themselves form a series, multiplication by a fixed number, squares and cubes with a small adjustment, and alternating rules for odd and even positions.
When should I skip a number series question?
If two rounds of testing produce no pattern within about 40 seconds. Under the sectional timer, the marks are better spent on analogy and classification questions.
How do I spot a multiplication series quickly?
Look at how fast the terms grow. If each term is roughly double or triple the last, differences will not help, and testing a multiplier immediately saves 20 seconds.
60-second recap
- Write the first differences before anything else.
- A pattern in the differences means a second-level series.
- Fast growth means multiplication or powers.
- Check squares, cubes and primes.
- Mark and return rather than pushing past 40 seconds.

Pattern
Example 1.
Example 2.
Example 3.
Example 4.
Example 5.
Pehle antar likho. Antar barabar hai to jodna hai, antar khud badhta hai to doosra antar dekho, aur agar sankhya tezi se badh rahi hai to guna aazmao.
Frequently Asked Questions
Number series
60-second recap
