Patterns and Sequences

A pattern is an arrangement that follows a rule. Finding the rule, extending the pattern and creating a new one are the three things a primary child does, and they are the foundation of algebraic thinking long before any letter stands for a number.

Kinds of patterns in Classes 1-5

  • Repeating patterns — red, blue, red, blue; clap, clap, tap.
  • Growing patterns — 2, 4, 6, 8 or a staircase of blocks that gains one each time.
  • Number patterns — odd numbers, multiples, square numbers, triangular numbers.
  • Shape patterns — rotating a triangle a quarter turn at each step.
  • Patterns in the number grid — the diagonal of a hundred chart, the last digits of the nine times table.

The sum of the first n odd numbers is always a perfect square: 1 + 3 = 4, 1 + 3 + 5 = 9. Discovering this with counters is a Class 5 investigation that leaves a permanent impression.

Why patterns matter

Pattern work is pre-algebra. A child who can say 'each time it goes up by three' has stated a rule in words; writing it as 3n + 1 later is only a change of notation. NCF 2005 and the NIPUN framework both place patterns at the centre of early mathematics for this reason.

Classroom activities

  • Bead strings, stamp printing and rangoli for repeating patterns.
  • Building a growing staircase with blocks and counting the blocks at each step.
  • Colouring multiples on a hundred chart and describing the pattern seen.
  • Asking children to make a pattern and let a partner find the rule — the creation step is where the thinking is.

One question per paper, either finding the next term of a sequence or a pedagogy item on why patterns are taught. For sequence questions, check the difference between consecutive terms first, then the ratio, then look for a two-step rule such as Fibonacci. The trap gives a sequence whose rule changes after the third term. In pedagogy items the correct answer links patterns with generalisation and algebraic thinking, not with decoration or drawing practice.

Why are patterns important in primary mathematics?

Because recognising a rule and stating it in words is the beginning of algebraic thinking. A child who says the numbers go up by three each time has generalised, which is exactly what an algebraic expression later records in symbols.

What are triangular numbers?

The sequence 1, 3, 6, 10, 15 and so on, formed by adding one more than was added before. They can be shown as dots arranged in triangles, which is where the name comes from.

How do you find the rule of a number sequence?

First check the difference between consecutive terms; if it is constant the rule is addition. If not, check whether each term is a multiple of the previous one, and then whether each term depends on the two before it.
