By ExamAtlas · 3/9/2026

Physical Geography of India

India covers about 3.28 million square kilometres and is the seventh largest country by area. Its standard meridian is 82 degrees 30 minutes east, passing through Mirzapur, and the Tropic of Cancer crosses eight states, which is among the most repeated facts in the section.

Location and extent

  • Latitudinal extent from about 8 degrees north to about 37 degrees north.
  • Standard meridian 82 degrees 30 minutes east, giving Indian Standard Time.
  • Indian Standard Time is five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
  • Coastline of about 7516 kilometres including the island groups.
  • Indira Point in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the southernmost point.

The Tropic of Cancer passes through eight states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram

Peaks and ranges

Kangchenjunga is the highest peak lying within India, and Anaimudi in the Western Ghats is the highest peak in peninsular India. The Western Ghats are continuous and higher, while the Eastern Ghats are broken by rivers flowing to the Bay of Bengal.

Passes and plateaus

Mountain passes appear regularly as one-line questions. The Zoji La connects Srinagar with Leh, the Rohtang Pass lies in Himachal Pradesh, the Nathu La links Sikkim with Tibet, and the Bomdi La is in Arunachal Pradesh. In the peninsula, the Palghat gap in Kerala and the Thal Ghat and Bhor Ghat in Maharashtra are the routes cut through the Western Ghats. The Deccan plateau itself is bounded by the Western Ghats, the Eastern Ghats and the Satpura range, and its north-western part is covered by the Deccan trap, a thick layer of basalt formed by ancient volcanic activity, which is also the parent material of the black soil found there.

The Tropic of Cancer passes through Bihar  |   It does not; Jharkhand and West Bengal are on the list

The Eastern Ghats are continuous  |   The Western Ghats are continuous; the Eastern are broken by rivers

Exam pointer — Geography gives 2 to 3 questions in General Awareness, and physical geography supplies the largest share. Questions on the Tropic of Cancer, the standard meridian and the highest peaks appear repeatedly. Target 10 seconds. Since these are recall questions, an unfamiliar one should be left blank rather than guessed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Through which states does the Tropic of Cancer pass?

  • Standard meridian 82 degrees 30 minutes east, जिससे Indian Standard Time तय होता है।
  • Indian Standard Time, Greenwich Mean Time
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Tropic of Cancer आठ राज्यों से गुजरती है: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura और Mizoram

Anaimudi

Indira Point

Tropic of Cancer, standard meridian

Frequently Asked Questions

Tropic of Cancer

Indian Standard Time, Greenwich Mean Time
