Trap 1: Forgetting to Flip the Sign
A split of +5 and +4 does not give roots 5 and 4 — it gives −5 and −4, because the roots are the negatives of the split. This is the most frequent silly error in the topic, and it flips comparisons entirely. Build the flip into your routine so it is never a separate thing to remember under time pressure.
Trap 2: Comparing Sums Instead of Roots
Some candidates compare the average or sum of the x-roots with that of the y-roots, which is wrong. The relation depends on the individual roots and how their ranges overlap, not on a single summary number. Always compare actual roots pairwise; a larger sum does not guarantee a larger variable across the whole range.
Trap 3: Missing the 'Cannot Be Established' Case
When the root ranges overlap, no strict relation holds, yet the interleave is easy to miss if you only glance at the biggest roots. Slow down for one second whenever the two root ranges are close, and check explicitly whether one range sits fully above the other before committing to an inequality.

Building Quadratic Speed Before the Exam
Because the block is so uniform, targeted practice pays off faster here than almost anywhere else in the Numerical section. Drill sets of ten comparison questions against a stopwatch, and after each set review not the answers but the method — did you read signs first, did you flip correctly, did you check for overlap. Keep a short log of the traps that catch you, because for most candidates the same two or three errors recur, and naming them is halfway to fixing them. Within a couple of weeks of focused practice the entire five-question block becomes a reliable ninety-second scoring opportunity rather than a place where the clock runs out.
