Remedial Teaching in Language

Remedial teaching in language means identifying the exact skill in which a child is stuck and working on that skill with a different method. 'Weak in Hindi' is not a diagnosis; 'cannot blend sounds into words' is, and only the second can be taught.

Locate the difficulty first

What the child cannot doWhere the problem lies
Names letters but cannot read wordsBlending and decoding
Reads aloud fluently but cannot answerComprehension and vocabulary
Reads so slowly that meaning is lostFluency
Speaks well but writes very littleWriting mechanics or confidence
Understands but does not speak in classAffective filter, fear or a silent period
Makes the same spelling errors repeatedlySound-symbol mapping
Cannot follow oral instructionsListening or unfamiliar school language

Remedies that match the difficulty

  • Decoding — systematic sound work, word building with cards, reading short familiar words in context.
  • Fluency — repeated reading of the same short passage, paired reading with a partner, teacher modelling.
  • Comprehension — predicting before reading, stopping to ask questions, retelling in the child's own words.
  • Writing — sentence starters, word banks, dictation of short familiar sentences, free writing that is not corrected at once.
  • Speaking — pair work before whole-class talk, allowing a silent period, accepting the home language.
  • Vocabulary — meeting words in context and using them, not copying meanings from a list.

Principles of language remediation

  1. Diagnose the exact sub-skill before teaching anything.
  2. Change the method; repeating the same explanation more loudly is not remediation.
  3. Work in small groups inside the school day, not as extra homework.
  4. Keep the material easy enough to succeed with, so confidence returns.
  5. Never announce who is in the remedial group; labelling undoes the work.
  6. Re-check after a few weeks and adjust.

Errors are the starting point, not the enemy

A child who writes 'mouses' or says 'I goed' has internalised a rule. A child who writes Hindi word order into an English sentence is transferring from a language she knows. Both errors are informative. Selective, gentle correction after the child has finished speaking works; interrupting mid-sentence to correct does not, because it raises anxiety and reduces the amount of language the child produces — the one thing remediation most needs.

Give a weak reader more of the same reading homework.  |   Find the exact sub-skill and teach it differently in a small group.

संकेत: 'भाषा में कमज़ोर' निदान नहीं है; कौन-सा कौशल अटका है यह पहचानिए — डिकोडिंग, प्रवाह, अर्थग्रहण या लेखन।

Remedial language teaching gives 1-2 questions and they are always situational. The described child usually has one specific difficulty, and the correct option identifies it and offers a matched, method-changing response. Wrong options prescribe more practice of the same kind, extra homework, informing parents that nothing can be done, or public correction. The fluent-reader-who-cannot-answer case is the most repeated single situation in this whole area.

Frequently asked questions

What should a teacher do for a child who reads fluently but cannot answer questions?

Work on comprehension, not on more reading practice. Predict before reading, stop at points to ask what is happening, and have the child retell the passage in her own words, building vocabulary alongside.

How is remedial teaching different from extra homework?

Remedial teaching identifies a specific sub-skill and teaches it by a different method with the teacher present. Extra homework repeats the same task in the same way, usually without support, and reinforces the original difficulty.

How should a teacher correct a child's spoken errors?

Selectively and after the child has finished speaking, often by repeating the sentence correctly rather than pointing out the mistake. Interrupting to correct raises anxiety and reduces the amount of language the child produces.

60-second recap

  • Diagnose the exact sub-skill: decoding, fluency, comprehension, writing or speaking.
  • Match the remedy to the difficulty; change the method, do not repeat it.
  • Work in small groups inside the school day, never as extra homework.
  • Keep remedial grouping confidential; labels undo the work.
  • Errors show rule building and transfer; correct selectively and gently.
