Rivers, Soils and Climate

The Ganga is India's longest river and the Godavari the longest of the peninsular rivers. Alluvial soil covers the largest area and black soil suits cotton. The southwest monsoon brings most of India's rain between June and September, and SSC asks all three areas as direct matching questions.

Major rivers

RiverOriginNote
GangaGangotri glacier, as the BhagirathiLongest river in India
YamunaYamunotri glacierLargest tributary of the Ganga
BrahmaputraTibet, known there as the TsangpoEnters India in Arunachal Pradesh
GodavariTrimbakeshwar, MaharashtraCalled the Dakshin Ganga
Narmada and TapiAmarkantak and the Satpura regionFlow west into the Arabian Sea
Krishna and KaveriWestern GhatsFlow east into the Bay of Bengal

The Bhagirathi and the Alaknanda meet at Devprayag to form the Ganga. The Narmada and the Tapi are the notable west-flowing rivers, running through rift valleys rather than forming deltas.

Soil types

  • Alluvial soil covers the largest area and dominates the northern plains.
  • Black or regur soil, formed from the Deccan lava, retains moisture and suits cotton.
  • Red soil develops on crystalline rock in the south and east.
  • Laterite soil forms in heavy rainfall areas and suits tea, coffee and cashew.
  • Desert soil is sandy and saline, and mountain soil is thin and forested.

Southwest monsoon: June to September, bringing most of India's annual rainfall

Climate

The monsoon reverses direction with the seasons. The retreating or northeast monsoon brings rain to the Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu in October and November. Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya record the heaviest rainfall in the country.

Narmada aur Tapi paschim ki taraf behti hain aur delta nahi banatin - ye do nadiyan SSC ka pasandeeda sawaal hain.

Tributaries worth knowing

The Indus system includes five main tributaries in India: the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. The Ganga receives the Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi and Son, and the Kosi is known as the sorrow of Bihar for its shifting course and floods. The Brahmaputra is joined by the Subansiri and the Manas in Assam. Among the peninsular rivers, the Godavari receives the Manjra and the Indravati, while the Krishna receives the Bhima and the Tungabhadra. SSC asks the tributary of a named river far more often than it asks about a river basin as a whole, so the pairing is what matters.

Solved examples

Example 1. Which is the longest peninsular river? The Godavari.

Example 2. Where do the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet? At Devprayag.

Example 3. Which soil is best suited to cotton? Black or regur soil.

Example 4. Which part of India receives rain from the retreating monsoon? The Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu.

Traps SSC repeats

All major Indian rivers flow east  |   The Narmada and Tapi flow west

Red soil covers the largest area  |   Alluvial soil does

Exam pointer — Rivers and soils together give about 1 question per shift, usually a river-and-origin or soil-and-crop match. Both are 10-second recall questions. The west-flowing rivers and the black soil crop link account for a large share of the questions asked from this topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the longest river in India?

The Ganga, which rises from the Gangotri glacier as the Bhagirathi and joins the Alaknanda at Devprayag. The Godavari is the longest of the peninsular rivers.

Which rivers flow west into the Arabian Sea?

The Narmada and the Tapi, both of which run through rift valleys and form estuaries rather than deltas. Most other major Indian rivers flow east.

Which soil is most suitable for cotton?

Black soil, also called regur, formed from the weathering of Deccan lava. It retains moisture well, which suits cotton cultivation.

When does the southwest monsoon reach India?

It normally arrives in early June and withdraws by September, bringing the bulk of the country's annual rainfall. The retreating monsoon then brings rain to Tamil Nadu in October and November.

60-second recap

  • Ganga longest overall; Godavari longest peninsular.
  • Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet at Devprayag.
  • Narmada and Tapi flow west.
  • Alluvial soil is the most widespread; black soil suits cotton.
  • Southwest monsoon June to September.

GangaGangotri glacier, Bhagirathi
YamunaYamunotri glacierGanga

Narmada aur Tapi paschim ki taraf behti hain aur delta nahi banatin - ye do nadiyan SSC ka pasandeeda sawaal hain.

Godavari

Frequently Asked Questions

Southwest monsoon
