Scaffolding and Language

Scaffolding is the temporary support a teacher gives a child inside the Zone of Proximal Development, withdrawn step by step as the child takes over. Language is the main tool of that support — the teacher's questions, hints and words become, in time, the child's own thinking.

What scaffolding looks like

The word comes from building: a scaffold holds the structure while it is being built and is removed afterwards. The three features that define real scaffolding are that it is temporary, responsive to what this child needs now, and gradually withdrawn.

  • Reading: the teacher reads the sentence, then reads with the child, then listens as the child reads alone.
  • Word problems: the teacher first asks 'what is given, what is asked', later only says 'check your first step', later says nothing.
  • Writing: a Class 2 child gets a sentence starter, then only a word bank, then a blank page.

Techniques a primary teacher uses

TechniqueExample in Classes 1-5
ModellingTeacher solves one subtraction aloud, thinking aloud at each step
Prompting'What did we do first yesterday?' instead of giving the step
Breaking the taskA story is written in three sentences on three days
Cue cards or number lineA support the child uses until mental calculation is secure
Peer supportA child who has understood explains to a partner
FadingSupport reduced deliberately, not left in place all year

Language as the carrier

Vygotsky argued that every higher mental function appears twice: first between people and then inside the child. The teacher's phrase 'first look at the tens place' is used aloud in Class 2 and reappears silently in the child's head in Class 4. This is why classroom talk, questioning and discussion are not extras — they are the material out of which thinking is made.

It also explains why a child taught only in an unfamiliar language struggles: the tool for building thought has been taken away. Using the child's home language for explanation while building the school language is sound Vygotskian practice.

Give the weak child a number line permanently so he always gets answers right.  |   Give the number line, then reduce its use — support that never fades is a crutch, not a scaffold.

Scaffolding means making the task easier.  |   Scaffolding keeps the task at full difficulty and supports the child through it.

संकेत: पाड़ (scaffolding) का अर्थ है अस्थायी सहारा जो धीरे-धीरे हटा लिया जाता है — कार्य आसान नहीं किया जाता, सहारा दिया जाता है।

One question per paper is normal, and it almost always tests whether you know support must be withdrawn. Options that describe permanent help, or that describe simplifying the task itself, are wrong. Note also that the term scaffolding was coined by Bruner, Wood and Ross while building on Vygotsky's ZPD — CTET has asked which theorist the term belongs to, so keep the pair together: ZPD is Vygotsky, the word scaffolding is Bruner's.

Frequently asked questions

What is scaffolding in teaching?

It is temporary, responsive support given inside a child's zone of proximal development — modelling, hints, task breakdown or peer help — which is deliberately reduced as the child becomes able to do the task independently.

Who gave the term scaffolding?

Jerome Bruner, with Wood and Ross, coined the term while extending Vygotsky's idea of the Zone of Proximal Development. The ZPD is Vygotsky's; the metaphor of the scaffold is Bruner's.

Why should scaffolding be withdrawn?

Because the aim is independent performance. Support that stays forever makes the child dependent, hides what he can actually do, and the task never moves out of the assisted zone into the independent one.

60-second recap

  • Scaffolding = temporary, responsive support inside the ZPD.
  • Three marks: temporary, matched to the child, gradually faded.
  • Techniques: modelling, prompting, task breakdown, cue material, peer help.
  • Higher functions appear first between people, then inside the child.
  • ZPD is Vygotsky's term; scaffolding is Bruner's word for the support in it.
