Solving Puzzles Under Time Pressure

Knowing how to solve a puzzle is only half the battle in SBI Clerk; the other half is knowing which puzzle to solve and which to abandon. With roughly 34 seconds a question and three or four puzzle sets on the paper, the aspirants who clear the cut-off are not those who crack every puzzle but those who harvest the two easy sets fully and refuse to bleed time on the hardest one. Time management inside the puzzle block decides your Reasoning score more than raw puzzle skill does.

Always Start From the Most Definite Clue

Whichever puzzle you attempt, open it from the clue that fixes something exactly — an end seat, a stated floor, a named day. Definite clues build the frame that floating clues then attach to, so starting there gets you placements in the first thirty seconds and tells you fast whether the puzzle is tractable. A puzzle that yields two or three certain placements quickly is one to finish; one that gives nothing concrete after a minute is warning you to move on.

Elimination Is Faster Than Deduction

Under pressure, crossing out wrong options often beats reasoning toward the right one. When a clue removes a possibility, strike the cell and watch whether a row or column is left with a single survivor. This negative-space thinking closes puzzles faster than forward chaining because each elimination can trigger a forced placement elsewhere. Trained candidates spend as much ink crossing out as filling in, and that habit is what separates a three-minute set from a six-minute struggle.

Do a Ten-Second Scan Before Committing

Before investing in any set, spend ten seconds counting its definite clues and judging its size. A puzzle with three or more exact clues and a single variable is a green light; a double-variable puzzle with only floating clues and many blanks is a set to park. This quick triage is a skill in itself — practise it in every mock until you can rank the paper's puzzles by difficulty at a glance and walk straight to the friendliest marks first.

A Mock Clear-Thinking Attempt

Picture the Reasoning section opening with a floor puzzle carrying four exact clues, a scheduling puzzle with mostly 'before and after' hints, and a double-variable categorization set. The clear-thinking route is to take the floor puzzle first for near-certain marks, then the scheduling puzzle whose numbered line resolves quickly, and to leave the double-variable set for last or skip it if the clock is tight. That ordering can turn a daunting fifteen-mark block into ten or twelve secured marks, which is exactly the score that clears SBI Clerk Prelims comfortably. The winners are decided by sequencing, not heroics.

Attempting puzzles top to bottom as printed  |   Triaging first and solving the easiest, most-anchored set first

Exam Pointer — SBI Clerk gives three to four puzzle sets in 20 minutes of Reasoning, so you cannot solve them all. Triage in ten seconds, attempt the two most-anchored sets fully, and skip the double-variable trap. Securing 10-12 puzzle marks cleanly beats chasing all 15-20 and running out of time with half-built grids.

60-Second Recap

  • Open every puzzle from its most definite clue.
  • Cross out wrong options — elimination forces placements.
  • Ten-second triage: count definite clues before committing.
  • Skip a puzzle that fixes nothing in a minute; bank the easy sets.
