Spatial Understanding
Spatial understanding is the ability to judge position, direction, distance and the relationship between objects in space. It develops before formal geometry and is the reason a Class 1 child can follow 'put the book under the table' long before she can name a rectangle.
What it covers in Classes 1-5
- Position and direction words: on, under, above, below, inside, outside, near, far, left, right, between.
- Turning and rotating: quarter turn, half turn, clockwise and anticlockwise.
- Views: what an object looks like from the top, front and side.
- Maps and routes: drawing the way from home to school, reading a simple classroom plan.

The Van Hiele connection
Van Hiele's first level, visualisation, is exactly this: a child recognises a shape by its overall look, saying 'it is a rectangle because it looks like a door'. Only at the next level does she start listing properties. Primary geometry must therefore spend real time on looking, handling and describing before any definition is introduced.

Why it deserves classroom time
Children who are weak in spatial sense struggle later with area, volume, graphs and even with aligning digits in a subtraction.
