How to Spot the Pattern in a Number Series
Number series carries 4 to 5 marks in SBI Clerk Prelims, and every question is solvable in under 30 seconds once you know the small family of patterns that examiners actually use. The skill being tested is pattern recognition under time pressure, not calculation, so the fastest candidates are those who scan the differences before they try any arithmetic. Because the format is predictable, a little disciplined practice turns number series from a source of anxiety into one of the most reliable pockets of marks in the whole Numerical section.
The First Move: Look at the Differences
Write the gap between each pair of consecutive terms. If the differences are constant, it is an arithmetic series; if the differences themselves grow in a pattern, the second layer of differences usually reveals it. This single habit — checking first differences, then second differences — cracks the majority of series without any guessing, so make it your automatic opening move on every question.
The Common Pattern Families
Almost every bank series belongs to one of a handful of types. Learn to test them in a fixed order so you never stare blankly at a row of numbers.
- Constant addition or subtraction (arithmetic)
- Constant multiplication or division (geometric)
- Increasing differences: +2, +4, +6 or ×2, ×3, ×4
- Squares, cubes or primes woven into the terms
- Two alternating series interleaved into one
Shortcut: Check the Ratio When Numbers Grow Fast
If terms roughly double or triple, stop adding and check ratios instead. A jump from 6 to 18 to 54 is obviously ×3, and testing ratio first saves you from hunting for an addition pattern that is not there. Growth speed is your clue: gentle growth means addition, steep growth means multiplication or powers, and reading that clue first is what keeps you from wasting time on the wrong family of patterns.
Solved Examples
Example 1: 3, 7, 11, 15, ? — differences are all +4, so the next term is 19.
Example 2: 2, 6, 18, 54, ? — each term is ×3, so the next is 162.
Example 3: 1, 4, 9, 16, ? — these are 1², 2², 3², 4², so the next is 5² = 25.

The Alternating Series Trap
One favourite examiner trick interleaves two separate series into a single row, so the odd-positioned terms follow one rule and the even-positioned terms follow another. A sequence like 2, 100, 4, 95, 8, 90 hides two threads: 2, 4, 8 (×2) and 100, 95, 90 (−5). When ordinary differences look chaotic and no single rule fits, split the series by picking alternate terms and analyse each thread on its own. This one check rescues questions that otherwise look completely random, and it takes only a few seconds once you make it part of your standard scan.
