Types of Numbers
Numbers are classified into natural, whole, integer, rational, irrational, prime and composite sets. For SSC CGL you mainly need three facts: 1 is neither prime nor composite, 2 is the only even prime, and there are 25 primes below 100. Almost every Tier 1 question tests one of these.
The classification you actually need
| Type | What it contains | Quick example |
|---|---|---|
| Natural (N) | Counting numbers from 1 | 1, 2, 3, 4 |
| Whole (W) | Natural numbers plus 0 | 0, 1, 2, 3 |
| Integer (Z) | Whole numbers plus negatives | -3, -1, 0, 5 |
| Rational (Q) | Can be written as p/q, q not 0 | 3/7, 0.25, -4 |
| Irrational | Non-terminating, non-repeating | root 2, pi |
| Prime | Exactly two factors | 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 |
| Composite | More than two factors | 4, 6, 8, 9 |
| Co-prime pair | HCF of the pair is 1 | 8 and 15 |
Two classifications trap candidates every year. 1 is neither prime nor composite because it has only one factor. And every integer is rational because 5 can be written as 5/1, so a question asking whether -7 is rational must be answered yes.
Shortcut: prime counting and prime testing
Memorise the prime count block instead of counting primes in the exam hall. This single line answers a whole family of questions in five seconds.
Primes below 100 = 25 | below 50 = 15 | 1 to 25 = 9 | 51 to 100 = 10
To test whether a given number is prime, you do not divide by every smaller number. Divide only by primes up to the square root of the number.
To test N, check primes up to root N only
Solved examples
Example 1. Is 221 prime? Root of 221 is about 14.9, so test primes up to 14: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13. It fails at 13, since 13 times 17 equals 221. So 221 is composite. Four divisions settled it.
Example 2. How many prime numbers lie between 1 and 50? Straight from the memorised block, the answer is 15. Listing them wastes forty seconds you do not have.
Example 3. Find the sum of the first 20 natural numbers. Use n(n+1)/2 = 20 times 21 divided by 2 = 210.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ 1 is a prime number | ✓ 1 is neither prime nor composite
✗ All even numbers are composite | ✓ 2 is even and prime
✗ root 4 is irrational | ✓ root 4 = 2, which is rational
✗ 0 is a natural number | ✓ 0 is whole, not natural
Yaad rakho: 1 na prime hai na composite, aur 2 hi ek aisa prime hai jo even hai. Rational ka matlab hai jise p/q ke roop me likha ja sake.
Exam pointer — SSC CGL Tier 1 asks 1 to 2 questions from number classification, usually as a direct statement-check or as a step inside a bigger question. Target 20 seconds. If a question asks you to count primes in a range you have not memorised, mark it and move on: with a 15-minute sectional timer, one slow counting question costs you two easy ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 1 a prime number?
No. A prime number must have exactly two distinct factors, 1 and itself. The number 1 has only one factor, so it is neither prime nor composite. This is the single most repeated trap in SSC number system questions.
How many prime numbers are there between 1 and 100?
There are 25 prime numbers below 100. The split is useful too: 15 primes lie below 50 and 10 lie between 51 and 100. Memorising this block saves you counting time in the exam.
What is the difference between rational and irrational numbers?
A rational number can be written as p/q where q is not zero, and its decimal either terminates or repeats. An irrational number, such as root 2 or pi, has a decimal that never terminates and never repeats.
Are co-prime numbers always prime?
No. Co-prime only means the HCF of the pair is 1. The numbers 8 and 15 are co-prime, yet neither of them is a prime number.
60-second recap
- 1 is neither prime nor composite; 2 is the only even prime.
- 25 primes below 100, 15 below 50.
- Test a prime by dividing only by primes up to root N.
- Every integer is rational; root of a perfect square is rational.
- 0 is whole and an integer, but not natural.

| Whole (W) | Natural
| Integer (Z) | Whole
Example 1.
Example 3.
Yaad rakho: 1 na prime hai na composite, aur 2 hi ek aisa prime hai jo even hai. Rational ka matlab hai jise p/q ke roop me likha ja sake.
Frequently Asked Questions
60-second recap
- 1 न prime है न composite; 2 इकलौता even prime है।
