Water Conservation

Water conservation means using water carefully and returning it to the ground so that sources do not run dry. India uses groundwater faster than rain can refill it, which is why this chapter has moved from a moral lesson to an urgent practical one in Classes 4 and 5.

Why conservation is needed

  • Only a small part of the earth's water is fresh and usable.
  • Tube wells draw water faster than rain refills the ground, so the water table falls year after year.
  • Rainfall is uneven — the same country has floods in one state and drought in another.
  • Growing population, irrigation and industry all increase demand.
  • Wasted and polluted water reduces the usable supply further.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting means collecting rain where it falls and either storing it or letting it soak into the ground. Rooftop harvesting sends roof water through a pipe into a tank or a recharge pit. Check dams and johads hold water on the land so it seeps down and raises the water table. Many Indian cities now require rainwater harvesting in new buildings.

Making it a school habit

The chapter works only if the school practises what it teaches: taps that do not leak, a water-level chart kept by children, a monitor for the drinking water area, and a simple rainwater pit if possible.
