World Geography Basics
World geography in SSC CGL is asked as a set of records and definitions: the largest ocean, the longest river, the highest peak, and the meaning of latitude, longitude and the date line. Learning the records table covers most of what is ever asked.
The records table
| Category | Answer | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Largest ocean | Pacific Ocean | Deepest point in the Mariana Trench |
| Largest continent | Asia | Smallest is Australia |
| Longest river | Nile | Amazon carries the most water |
| Largest hot desert | Sahara | In northern Africa |
| Highest peak | Mount Everest | In the Himalayas, on the Nepal-China border |
| Largest country by area | Russia | Spans two continents |
Latitude and longitude
- Latitudes are parallel circles measuring distance north or south of the equator.
- Longitudes are meridians running from pole to pole, measuring distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
- The equator is at zero degrees latitude and the Prime Meridian at zero degrees longitude.
- Each degree of longitude corresponds to four minutes of time.
- The International Date Line roughly follows the 180 degree meridian.
One degree of longitude equals four minutes of time, so 15 degrees equals one hour
Important lines and zones
The Tropic of Cancer lies at about 23.5 degrees north and the Tropic of Capricorn at the same distance south. The region between them receives the most direct sunlight, which is why it is the hottest zone. The Arctic and Antarctic Circles lie at about 66.5 degrees north and south.
Ek degree deshantar ka matlab chaar minute ka samay. Isi se local time aur standard time ke sawaal turant hal ho jaate hain.
Local time and standard time
Places on the same meridian share the same local time, and each country adopts a standard meridian so that the whole territory keeps one clock. Since one degree corresponds to four minutes, a place fifteen degrees east of another is one hour ahead of it. India uses a single time zone based on 82 degrees 30 minutes east. Crossing the International Date Line from east to west adds a day, and crossing from west to east subtracts one. These conversions form a small but predictable question type that requires only the four-minute rule and careful reading of direction.
Solved examples
Example 1. Which is the largest ocean? The Pacific Ocean.
Example 2. How much time does one degree of longitude represent? Four minutes.
Example 3. Which is the largest hot desert in the world? The Sahara.
Example 4. At what latitude does the Tropic of Capricorn lie? About 23.5 degrees south.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Australia is the largest continent | ✓ Asia is the largest; Australia is the smallest
✗ One degree of longitude equals one hour | ✓ It equals four minutes; 15 degrees make an hour
Exam pointer — World geography gives under 1 question per shift on average, so it deserves less revision time than Indian geography. Concentrate on the records table and the four-minute rule, which together account for most of what appears. Target 10 seconds when the question is a record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the longest river in the world?
The Nile is conventionally listed as the longest, while the Amazon carries by far the greatest volume of water. SSC follows the conventional listing.
How much time does one degree of longitude represent?
Four minutes. Since the Earth turns 360 degrees in 24 hours, fifteen degrees of longitude correspond to one hour of time difference.
Where are the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn?
At about 23.5 degrees north and 23.5 degrees south respectively. The Arctic and Antarctic Circles lie at about 66.5 degrees north and south.
Which is the largest and which the smallest continent?
Asia is the largest continent by both area and population, and Australia is the smallest. The Pacific is the largest ocean.
60-second recap
- Pacific largest ocean; Asia largest continent.
- Nile longest river; Sahara largest hot desert.
- One degree of longitude equals four minutes.
- Tropics at 23.5 degrees; polar circles at 66.5 degrees.
- Lower priority than Indian geography.

Australia |
Tropic of Cancer लगभग 23.5 degrees north पर है और Tropic of Capricorn उतनी ही दूरी पर दक्षिण में। Arctic and Antarctic Circles
Ek degree deshantar ka matlab chaar minute ka samay. Isi se local time aur standard time ke sawaal turant hal ho jaate hain.
Pacific Ocean।
Sahara।
